Mobile street furniture made from recycled materials
In the summer of 2017, the Imagina Madrid programme incorporates seven letters as an identifying element: I-M-A-G-I-N-A, which travel to each of the activity sites until they become part of the equipment of Matadero Madrid.
All this set of street furniture and public space is built from logics of reuse, encounter and mobility. During the design process, the following aspects were taken into account:
1. Energy performance
Transport-adjusted design to reduce fuel energy consumption. The incorporation of photovoltaic solar panels with batteries and twilight sensors and high-efficiency lighting make the furniture a 100% clean energy installation.
2. Choice of materials
The reuse of wood from benches in Madrid for the platforms and street lamp globes from the public lighting warehouse for the filling of the letters represents a fundamental saving in materials. As these materials are designed for use in public spaces, they are highly durable and resistant.
3. Water cycle
In addition to the savings made by reusing materials in the manufacturing process, plants from the municipal nurseries are incorporated into the spaces where the letters are installed, which will be watered mostly with reused water.
4. Environmental quality
All the pieces in the F.U.A. editions can be used for a variety of urban uses: benches, tables, meeting spaces… In addition, their autonomous lighting allows them to be installed anywhere, which improves their performance as furniture for night-time events.
5. Long life cycle
The design with a view to having second and third lives of a space that is thought to be ephemeral makes it possible for Madrid City Council to have furniture that continues to be useful in the city’s public space.
