Reconstruction and innovation through collaboration

The new Scuola di Musica di Finale Emilia exemplifies how collaboration between Public Administration and citizens can lead to better architecture.

The project is a joint effort between the municipality and non-profit organizations to create a building that meets high energy and environmental standards while making a profound social impact. The construction is led by the Associazione Solidarietà Vigolana Onlus, which organizes volunteer initiatives to raise necessary funds and also provides both human resources and materials.

The design incorporates a structure of X-lam structural wood panels, a material known for its sustainability, elasticity, and excellent mechanical performance, making it particularly suitable for earthquake-prone areas.

The school plays a vital role in the revitalization of one of the urban centers most affected by the May 2012 earthquake in Emilia Romagna, Italy. Located between the former primary school and the local sports center—both abandoned after the earthquake—this modest cultural space serves as a starting point for the regeneration of the city’s central areas, still largely neglected in the aftermath of the disaster.
