Co-design and collaborative construction of a greenhouse in San Blas Community Health Medical Center
In 2020, the Health Center of San Blas contacted us with a need and desire to add a new greenhouse to their communitarian urban garden, situated at the back of the public hospital. The petition was not focusing on a fancy design for an urban greenhouse, rather than a development of a participatory and inclusive building process along with the community of San Blas.
The design phase was carried out through four workshops of co-design, coordinated by Zuloark and counting with the participation of the CMSc’s community. The co-design proccess aimed on the understanding of the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of the site by sharing stories, anecdotes and experiences that had previously occurred in the urban garden. Through discussion, design activities and model testing, we decided the location, the size, the shape and also the functions of the new greenhouse.
During the construction, the participants had the opportunity to be involved in all parts of the manufacturing processes, from preparatory woodwork, to assembling and finishings. A few days after the completion of the construction, we celebrated the inauguration of the greenhouse, inviting the rest of the San Blas community, their friends and family to plant the first seeds inside the new greenhouse.
