From grocery store to artisan furniture wokshop: Isabel and Ana’s transformation of Peccata Viruta

Peccata Viruta is a small creative space located in the Valdezarza neighbourhood of Madrid. Isabel and her daughter Ana transformed the old family grocery store (Mantequerías Delfín) into a furniture design workshop and store in 2019.

The central focus of our work is the connection with the memory of the space. This refurbishment, carried out on a minimal budget, successfully updates the space to meet new needs while preserving links to its original elements, ensuring the place retains a unique character.

The space is designed to adapt to the needs of the Peccata Viruta artisan furniture workshop. By removing all interior partitions, a new open-plan layout is created, with natural lighting serving as its main feature.

Leveraging the large window surfaces, new openings are created towards the courtyard to enhance natural light and facilitate the circulation of light and ventilation throughout the space. The centrally located pillar becomes a key element in reorganizing the premises, allowing for the possibility of dividing it into multiple rooms and enabling its transformation into a dwelling in the future.

All the furnishings in the space are crafted from simple and inexpensive materials. Pine slats and plywood are used to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while enabling quick construction and easy customization by clients. To add color, reused scraps of hydraulic tiles are incorporated into the floors, and fabrics from La Tapicera are used in the exterior shop windows, making the premises stand out within the urban fabric of the Valdezarza neighborhood.
