<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A stand that transforms into a canopy for the school garden at República de Panamá Public School</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since 2012, we have collaborated with Madrid City Council to design its stand for the National Environmental Congress. Each year, the challenge is to make the pavilion an example of sustainability, where its real purpose lies in the second life it is given after the exhibition.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On this occasion, we worked together with the community of República de Panamá Public School in Madrid, where the structure was relocated to the school playground, creating a shaded area, an amphitheatre, an outdoor classroom, and an extension of the existing school garden.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB.jpg"><img decoding="async" width="2400" height="1600" src="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8046" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB.jpg 2400w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB-1920x1280.jpg 1920w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/22_CONAMA_IFEMA_WEB-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 2400px) 100vw, 2400px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The stand at IFEMA | Photo by Lourdes Cabrera</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The design reuses materials sourced from Madrid’s municipal storage facilities: damaged traffic signs, bricks and concrete blocks from the Municipal Stonemasonry Workshop, plants from the Retiro Greenhouse Nursery, mulch from the Migas Calientes plant, logistical support from the Huerto del Retiro Environmental Information and Education Centre, as well as municipal transport services.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/7721-11.jpg"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="671" src="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/7721-11.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-8045" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/7721-11.jpg 1000w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/7721-11-300x201.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/7721-11-768x515.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Construction process at República de Panamá Public School | Photo by Alfredo Borghi</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After the exhibition, together with the Environmental Education Department, we transformed the stand into an outdoor classroom in the playground of República de Panamá School, reusing it as part of the school’s playground renaturalisation strategy. During the inauguration, a workshop was also held with illustrator David Cárdenas to design and paint the ground around the installation, incorporating representations of native flora and fauna.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Traffic sign poles from the municipal storage facilities support lightweight canvas shades that provide shelter from the sun. The shade cast by the existing trees in the school grounds is also used to make the space more comfortable and habitable throughout the year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The whole intervention was conceived as an adaptable and flexible system of furniture: an outdoor classroom with two planters, a wooden tiered seating area, and a space for gathering. Together with the shaded areas created, these elements make up the open-air classroom, which can be complemented with movable items typical of any learning space, such as blackboards or chairs.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Collaborative design and construction of a greenhouse for the community garden of Matacavalls</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Contorno Urbano team had already invited us in 2019 to collaborate in the framework of the MODUL project with a workshop for the collaborative design and construction of a children&#8217;s play space. Since then we have felt a deep affinity, both in our understanding of public space and in our working methods. We shared the idea that urban design should be open, inclusive and situated, and MODUL offered us an opportunity to broaden that spectrum and build a city from plurality.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7253" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_02-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Group of workers and volunteers building up the structure | Photo by Ángela Sueiro (Contorno Urbano)</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The greenhouse project arose as a continuation of this neighbourhood space in Matacavalls, where in addition to the children&#8217;s playground there is a very active community garden. In conjunction with Contorno Urbano and different active associations in the neighbourhood, the design and construction of this infrastructure was carried out through a collaborative process in several phases:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We carried out different walks through the garden to understand the functioning and use of the space and its evolution. In addition, we drew selected plants while the users of the garden exchanged their personal visions about the crops.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Design and construction phase</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To tackle the design, we carried out an activity of working with models to compose the space. We started with an element that folded on itself and each child spontaneously created shapes and signified them, creating multiple creatures/greenhouse and a dinosaur. In addition, a wooden bench was built so that the participants could familiarise themselves with the material and the working tools.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7264" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Alfredo-Borghi_15-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Paper models exploring the design of the new greenhouse | Photo by Zuloark</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Programme ideation phase and management models</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As a next step in the co-creation process, we started to think about the multiple uses that the new greenhouse could incorporate. We came up with ideas and concepts such as lockers for people, support for photovoltaic panels, windows for the summer, dinosaurs, tree houses, boats&#8230; We also talked about the management of the different spaces in the garden and how the new construction could support the proposed new programmes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7266" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zuloark_Invernadero-Matacavalls_2025_Angela-Sueiro-@Contornourbano_04-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Children building furniture for the greenhouse | Photo by Ángela Sueiro (Contorno Urbano)</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Initial phase of the collaborative construction</strong></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Finally, the precise measurement of the work site was carried out, where we were able to discuss and dramatise the options for implementation, access, location of the programme and the route along the piece, until the new location for the greenhouse was redefined on the ground.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Little by little, the Matacavalls park has become a living, inclusive space in permanent transformation, and a point of reference for the neighbourhood. It has grown in surface area, in uses, in care and, above all, in neighbourhood involvement. With participatory processes such as the construction of this greenhouse, MODUL has demonstrated that public space can be a powerful tool for generating active community and improving the quality of life of its inhabitants.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A pilot project with the wood workshop in Prison N. 12 of Cerro Carancho in Rivera, Uruguay</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In October 2024, Campo Adentro invites us to Uruguay to develop a project with the wood workshop at Cerro Carancho prison, as part of the Festival de la Madera. We propose a collaborative system based on prototyping and furniture construction, creating a space where participants can make decisions throughout the process and propose design solutions—an &#8220;unfinished&#8221; design enriched by their knowledge and experience.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2194" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-4024x2194.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7078" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-4024x2194.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-300x164.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-768x419.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-1536x837.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/IMG_1226-2048x1117.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">The wood workshop in Cerro Carancho Prison | Photo by Zuloark</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People deprived of freedom, students, and design professionals collaborate to design and build public spaces while contributing new narratives on the forestry crisis. We co-design and construct two pieces of furniture, fostering a dialogue between the inside and outside of the prison and creating experimental spaces for coexistence, co-creation, and collective reflection.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Design and construction workshop for a children&#8217;s playground within the framework of the Modul project in Hospitalet de Llobregat</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Modul project was promoted in 2018 by the City Council of Hospitalet de Llobregat for the transformation of a disused site in the district of La Florida &#8211; Les Planes, with the intention of making it safer, suitable for play and inclusive. In 2019, the <a href="https://www.contornourbano.com/">Contorno Urbano Foundation</a>, a neighbourhood organisation, led the project to regenerate the space, creating a work plan in which our collaborative design and construction workshop is framed.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion02.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1125" src="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion02.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7166" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion02.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion02-300x225.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion02-768x576.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Design models made by students | Photography by Zuloark</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our contribution implements the fifth children&#8217;s playground infrastructure, followed by the ship container (storage during the process and public equipment when the infrastructures are finished), the fitting out of the accesses and rest furniture, the giant mural on the retaining wall that delimits the space and the climbing wall also inserted in the wall. Many of the infrastructures have a multi-use condition, activating the space in a more continuous way given the different forms of use of the interventions according to the criteria of the users or the activities that are carried out.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion07-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion07-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7172" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion07-1.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion07-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion07-1-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Construction of the wooden structure on site | Photography by Contorno Urbano</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The excellent groundwork previously carried out by the Foundation with local community stakeholders enabled us to establish a well-integrated process of citizen participation in both the design and construction phases of the project. In the weeks prior to the construction, we proposed to the organisers to hold a parallel design workshop: on the one hand, our team would come up with creative options for construction and, on the other hand, the students from various schools in the area would give free rein to their imagination. The only condition we set was to work with the reclaimed materials we had selected from the public works warehouse of the Hospitalet city council.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion05-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion05-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-7173" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion05-1.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion05-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Zuloark_MODUL_reseleccion05-1-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Construction of the curved floor | Photography by Contorno Urbano</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The most difficult task was to combine the different designs that came out of this process, and we achieved this by working from the unification of the narratives that describe what happens in the space rather than from the diversity of designs. The result was a deconstructed tunnel reusing large pipes and a wooden framework and a corrugated floor made of tyres and wooden slats.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The facility has become self-managed by a network of agents and functions as an open-air community classroom for educational, leisure, sporting and cultural activities.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How can architecture express itself as productive cooperation, exchange, solidarity and living?</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://www.making-futures.com/">Making Futures Bauhaus+</a> is an action-research project that addresses the future of architecture as a collective resource. Initiated in 2018, on the centennial of the Bauhaus, the project emerged as a collaboration between <a href="https://raumlabor.net/">raumlabor</a> and the <a href="https://www.udk-berlin.de/startseite/">Berlin University of the Arts</a>, organizing activities in Berlin, Istanbul, Palermo, and Oberweissbach.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5990" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_1-min-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Haus der Statistik | Photography by Lena Giovanazzi</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the Making Futures Summer School at <a href="https://hausderstatistik.org/">Haus der Statistik</a> in Berlin, more than 150 participants come together in a temporary academy set up within the ruins of the former Department of Statistics of East Germany. Through Making Futures, this massive, abandoned building is transformed into a laboratory for exploring the city’s political imagination. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over two weeks, this non-disciplinary learning environment hosts a diverse curriculum led by practitioners in spatial practices. Participants design, build, negotiate, maintain, perform, and celebrate an educational and convivial space both inside and around Haus der Statistik. Simultaneously, the school becomes a dynamic actor in urban transformation, creating a shared sphere of action that connects participants, neighbors, and the wider civic community.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5991" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_4-min-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Building Making Futures | Photography by Lena Giovanazzi</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over two weeks, participants construct experimental furniture pieces and engage in a program of talks, workshops, and lectures. Making Futures thus proposes, through practice, new forms of collective learning to tackle current urban challenges such as speculation, tourism, and pollution. This approach challenges the urbanism dictated by the real estate market and instead promotes a “furniture urbanism&#8221;: a city model built through small, mobile, and community-driven interventions.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the construction workshop we lead with the participants, we collectively explore what we define as “pioneering uses” for Haus der Statistik: its infrastructure, furniture, methodologies of coexistence, and material conditions for hospitality.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5992" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_9-min-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Meeting area | Photography by Lena Giovanazzi</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As in a domestic space, the kitchen, resting area, and meeting and work tables become prototypes for learning to cut wood, use machines, and understand the logics behind the materials. Each small piece of furniture then grows to meet the needs of the different groups participating in the Making Futures School.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The kitchen transforms into a large bar with a terrace in the wooded garden; the resting area expands into an intimate pavilion with a large bench-lounge, and the deliberation space turns into a beautiful terrace that can host assemblies, concerts, and conferences in various formats throughout the summer.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_6-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_6-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5995" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_6-min.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_6-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_6-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Camping | Photography by Lena Giovanazzi</figcaption></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_2-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_2-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5994" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_2-min.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_2-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_Making-Futures_2019_Lena-Giovanazzi_2-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Working space | Photography by Lena Giovanazzi</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The participants of the school exceed expectations, challenging schedules and organizing autonomous activities. They start the day with yoga, prepare collective lunches, and launch a fanzine to share their experiences and reflections. To close, they organize a large “presentation party” to showcase their work not only to those inhabiting Haus der Statistik but also to the city at large.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Making Futures transforms Haus der Statistik, once dedicated to statistics and planning,&nbsp; into an example of how urban experimentation can shift from rigid planning to an open model that trusts in its own citizens. In doing so, Making Futures questions the traditional role of architects and urban planners as sole experts, diluting authorship and sharing the responsibility of imagining and building shared futures.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over the course of a week, planning, land cleaning, preparation, and the installation of new infrastructure for the protection and support of future activities are carried out. With the active participation of the neighbourhood, an entrance was built with a footbridge that bridges the unevenness of the terrain, a storage module and furniture for resting. All these pieces were completed in time for the inauguration of the new space, which welcomed a large number of neighbours and where we shared local recipes and conversations about the neighbourhood.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5931" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2023_Huerto-La-Palma_Jose_0163-min-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Bench for seating in the shade of the trees | Photography by José Fernando Concepción Feliciano</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This green space is thus forged as a meeting place, fostering collaboration and teamwork and improving coexistence and social cohesion in the neighbourhood. The presence of different entities during the project fostered new links and closer ties between the inhabitants. This initiative allowed the neighbours, in such a short period of time, to unite and work together to create a green and sustainable space in their neighbourhood, constituting not only a place to grow food, but also a space for social activism and continuous learning.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Making urbanism from the smallest scale</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since 2013, Zuloark has been collaborating with the Javeriana University of Bogotá in its <a href="https://arquidiseno.javeriana.edu.co/programa-de-experiencias-internacionales">PEI programme (Programme of International Experiences)</a>, hosting its Architecture and Design students in Madrid to carry out a series of participatory design and construction workshops in conjunction with local communities. This line of workshops is called <strong>Hand Made Urbanism</strong>, understanding the city and the capacity we have to improve it from a multi-scalar perspective, where the smallest constructive details affect and relate to much broader environments, from the scale of the neighbourhood to the city itself. Thus, we intervene in urban planning from the smallest scale: that of urban planning made with our own hands.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2024_PEI-Villaverde_Lourdes-Cabrera_1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1620" height="1080" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2024_PEI-Villaverde_Lourdes-Cabrera_1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5827" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2024_PEI-Villaverde_Lourdes-Cabrera_1.jpg 1620w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2024_PEI-Villaverde_Lourdes-Cabrera_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2024_PEI-Villaverde_Lourdes-Cabrera_1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2024_PEI-Villaverde_Lourdes-Cabrera_1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1620px) 100vw, 1620px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Children playground built for the Navas de Tolosa Infant and Primary School, 2024 | Photography by Lourdes Cabrera</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since 2013 there has been a succession of buildings from the PEI programme, hosted in different parts of Madrid, which have become living laboratories of urban planning:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The auditorium of 100 chairs</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first Hand Made Urbanism workshops were the traditional summer workshops in the<strong> Campo de Cebada</strong>, a public space of vital importance in the history of the neighbourhood of La Latina that was for many years self-designed and managed by the neighbourhood.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloar_2013_Hand-Made-Urbanismo_ECDC_Zuloark_4.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1609" height="1073" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloar_2013_Hand-Made-Urbanismo_ECDC_Zuloark_4.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5796" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloar_2013_Hand-Made-Urbanismo_ECDC_Zuloark_4.jpg 1609w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloar_2013_Hand-Made-Urbanismo_ECDC_Zuloark_4-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloar_2013_Hand-Made-Urbanismo_ECDC_Zuloark_4-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloar_2013_Hand-Made-Urbanismo_ECDC_Zuloark_4-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1609px) 100vw, 1609px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Handmade chairs in Campo de Cebada | Photography by Zuloark</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the first edition, the idea was to build an auditorium by putting together a large number of small chairs that were designed and built in situ with material donated to the Campo de Cebada. In the second edition, the work was different; instead of equipping the Campo with small infrastructures, a working methodology was proposed that would allow many people to work on small objects that could be used and shared with others. For the third edition, it was decided to prioritise the care of the space and efforts were dedicated to rehabilitating, caring for and protecting the furniture that was already in use.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Battle Royale</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2015, PEI students returned to Madrid for a week of Hand Made Urbanism workshops at <a href="https://www.medialab-matadero.es/">Medialab Prado</a>, a cultural laboratory open to the city. Zuloark, together with the <a href="https://basurama.org/">Basurama</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/pkmn_architects/?hl=es">PKMN architects</a> collectives, called this edition ‘Battle Royale’, after a film directed by Takeshi Kitano in 2000. In the film, a group of students are destined to live on a deserted island with a number of personal tools, needing collective intelligence to power these tools and survive.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2015_PEI_Battle-Royale_Zuloark_1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2015_PEI_Battle-Royale_Zuloark_1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5800" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2015_PEI_Battle-Royale_Zuloark_1.jpg 1200w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2015_PEI_Battle-Royale_Zuloark_1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2015_PEI_Battle-Royale_Zuloark_1-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Students working in the courtyard of Medialab Prado | Photography by Zuloark</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Based on this plot, a collaborative strategy was designed for groups who were assigned a toolbox and an outline based on a 60x60cm pixel grid, within which they had to design the best possible piece of furniture by seeking alliances. Their surprise at the end was to discover that the set of elements, which functioned as a catalogue of independent pieces, exceeded their expectations when assembled into a final piece.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Experimental furniture for the library</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2022, the students participating in the PEI programme were able to connect with the community of the Villaverde neighbourhood in Madrid through a new edition of Hand Made Urbanism workshops. During one week, a co-design and co-construction workshop was held at the <a href="https://www.comunidad.madrid/centros/biblioteca-maria-moliner">María Moliner Public Library</a> where pieces of urban furniture were developed to serve as new infrastructures for the outdoor space of the Library. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This space, of approximately 400 m2, was presented as a place of opportunity for urban experimentation. Each of these pieces can serve as an individual bench, but they can also be combined and create larger compositions such as an urban parliament, meeting points or play spaces.&nbsp;Parallel to the construction, several lectures by Madrid-based architects and designers took place, creating a rich learning context.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In 2023, a new Hand Made Urbanism workshop was held to design and build furniture to equip the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/huertaldeospinos/?locale=es_LA">Huerta Los Pinos</a>. Considering the participatory nature of this community, the aim is to generate a learning environment open to all interested people (neighbours, young people, adults, families and public entities), with whom we work collaboratively to improve the public space.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>A particular school playground</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the last edition of PEI 2024, the idea was to design new furniture for the playground of the <a href="https://www.educa2.madrid.org/web/centro.cp.navasdetolosa.madrid#ad-image-0">Navas de Tolosa Infant and Primary School</a> in Villaverde. The project aimed to create an open learning environment where PEI students can integrate with a group of proactive young people who are already working with Villaverde council. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the workshop, a series of multi-faceted tables and benches were built for resting, eating or meeting as a parliament, as well as a play area adjacent to the school. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The German-Spanish collective Zoohaus, cofounded by Zuloark, was invited to participate as part of their practice <a href="https://inteligenciascolectivas.org/es/inicio/">Inteligencias Colectivas</a>. We spent 20 days in Karachi, Pakistan, discovering nearly 60 amazing objects (a term we use for non-standardized intelligent constructions), meeting more than 200 people, designing and building an urban structure using local techniques in collaboration with Marvi Mazhar and her team and engaging a human network of more than 30 people. However, we were still far away from knowing Karachi in all its complexity.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5779" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_2-min-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Citizens of Karachi helping to incorporate the structure&#8217;s envelope | Photography by Amna Abdullah</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Moving around Karachi with open eyes and as close as possible to what was happening around, we perceived from the very first second the city’s strong manufacturing character and the Pakistani way of doing things “better done than perfect” with unexpected intelligent design solutions that solve specific problems and are determined by the materials and technologies available at the time. <strong>Recycling is a leitmotiv in Karachi</strong>. As objects, these solutions shape the perception and use of public space. The systems of urban objects and bottom-up infrastructure (trash collectors, goods delivery, transportation) are in fact the cornerstones of urban behavior in the city. Urbanism in Karachi is handmade, built by objects and manufactures.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Together with the Pakistani community and through a series of workshops, we co-designed a critical construction centered on architectural and urban planning techniques that combine conventional know-how with present-day needs. Many materials —reusable, semi-industrialized, craft and manufactured— are incorporated into this customized construction. Karachi, the mega-creative city of makers, joint for this project the guilds of charpoy, truck art, masonry and motorcycle decoration to create a playful urban installation called “Jugaad”, right in the heart of the city. While this research and project was geared mainly toward amateur builders, it aspires to something greater: <strong>to encourage and cultivate citizen science</strong>.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="4024" height="2683" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-4024x2683.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5781" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-4024x2683.jpg 4024w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2016_IC-Karachi_Amna-Abdullah_6-min-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 4024px) 100vw, 4024px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Metal worker working on the assembly of the structure | Photography by Amna Abdullah</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the process of IC Pakistan particularly noteworthy was the commitment of Sara-Duana Meyer and Stefan Winkler as initiators and curators of <strong>“Urbanities”</strong>. Is also remarkable the participation of initiatives like <a href="https://www.pakistanchowk.com/about-chowk-">Pakistan Chowk Community Centre</a>, represented by Marvi Maazar in this case, or the <a href="https://vaslart.org/#">Vasl Artists&#8217; Association</a>, created and supported by Adeela Suleman and Naila Mahmood. We also want to express an immense gratitude for the ones who showed us the “real” Karachi and their streets: Ali Raza, Zoya Ahmed, Huma Tassawar, Shahana Rajani, Madeeha Syed, Basil Andrews and many others.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Construction of four new prototypes based on traditional knowledge</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Palomino is a small town on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. From<a href="https://inteligenciascolectivas.org/es/acerca/"> Collective Intelligences</a>, a research platform that works with emerging technologies, Zuloark (co-founder of Zoohaus) carries out the <strong>IC Palomino</strong> project.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_carro-cocina_Zoohaus_15.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2037" height="1358" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_carro-cocina_Zoohaus_15.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5743" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_carro-cocina_Zoohaus_15.jpg 2037w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_carro-cocina_Zoohaus_15-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_carro-cocina_Zoohaus_15-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_carro-cocina_Zoohaus_15-1536x1024.jpg 1536w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2037px) 100vw, 2037px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Kitchen trolley built by the neighbors | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">First, we carried out an extensive recording of the village&#8217;s knowledge. Thus, devices such as kitchen carts, zuncho rocking chairs, palm weavings or pop-up lanterns are catalogued as part of the collective learning and can thus be replicated in the future. In a second phase, we conducted a series of design and construction workshops to develop four infrastructure prototypes for Palomino, using the knowledge previously learned. These prototypes fit the main needs identified by the community: open cultural infrastructures, community meeting places and a network of dry toilets as an urban acupuncture action.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5745" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_farola-emergente_Zoohaus_13-min-1-2048x1366.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Self-built street lamp in Palomino | Photograpy by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Basilia dry toilet</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The water table in some areas of the village is polluted due to problems with the septic tanks in many of the houses. An urban strategy is designed to implement a network of dry toilets to avoid contaminating the soil and to extract compost and fertilisers. This dry toilet on the Basilia Perez lot is the first private prototype. Built with a local wood structure and enclosures of zuncho and cañalata, it rests on the ground with a shallow and removable foundation to allow its dismantling in the future.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Bano-Basilia_Zoohaus_5.jpg"><img decoding="async" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Bano-Basilia_Zoohaus_5.jpg" alt=""/></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Collecting system of the dry toilet | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>House of Culture of Palomino</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Junta de Acción Comunal gave a plot of the Casa de la Cultura for the construction of a house for the village dance group. It was decided to place the covered stage in the second half of the site, with the mountains as a backdrop. A concrete slab was made because of the stability required for the dance. The supporting structure was made of wood. The roof was made of two different types of woven palms to perfect the joints and the changes in slope for water drainage.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-scaled.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2560" height="1707" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-scaled.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5751" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-768x512.jpg 768w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_8-2048x1365.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Pavillion of the House of Culture | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition to dance, this place also became the site of traditional music workshops and workshops for the construction of handmade instruments, open air cinemas and worship meetings.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_9.jpg"><img decoding="async" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Casa-Cultura_Zoohaus_9.jpg" alt=""/></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Worship event in the House of Culture | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Mobile bleachers made of guadua</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In order to provide the Casa de la Cultura with infrastructure, light, mobile bleachers were built. A pile of guadua or bamboo that was to be discarded was used as material. To use it, a construction detail was invented that doubled the pieces that worked horizontally, where the guadua could suffer more, and a single one was placed in the positions where the guadua worked in favour. The stands were divided into two parts for better mobility, and the union of these parts was thought of in a very simple way, fitting one piece into the other without screws or pins. The people of the village have continued to care for them, fumigating the whole structure to avoid termites and other pathogens.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Gradas-Guadua_Zoohaus_1.jpg"><img decoding="async" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Gradas-Guadua_Zoohaus_1.jpg" alt=""/></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Children observing a soccer match from the bleachers | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sports Office</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The villagers needed a place to meet, to organise themselves, to keep some things or to file the reports of their sporting activities. This office was to be a temporary construction, on a plot of land full of vegetation, close to the village square.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Oficina-Deportes_Zoohaus_10.jpg" alt=""/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Outside view of the Sports office | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For its construction, it was decided to use a completely reversible system. The platform, with a structure of wooden beams and unpolished planks, was raised off the ground to avoid dampness and to allow the piece to breathe underneath as well. The structure of the office was built with recycled guadua. The joints were made using the aforementioned double truss technique. The roof is a structure of two alternating hyperbolic paraboloids that run through the space, avoiding the vegetation and achieving the appropriate slopes.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Oficina-Deportes_Zoohaus_11.jpg" alt=""/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Indoors storage for children equipment | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We worked with Rogelio, a craftsman from Palomino, designing the exterior vertical enclosures of the office, built with metal frames and braided plastic straps, which are waterproof and translucent. The vertical enclosures were made with cane as if we were making a large wicker basket. The office furniture was also built at a later moment with the same technique.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img decoding="async" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_2011_IC-Palomino_Rogelio_Zoohaus_17-min.jpg" alt=""/><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">Rogelio working on zuncho patterns | Photography by Zoohaus</figcaption></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Building Bonds Between Formal, Non-formal and Informal Education</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><a href="https://asoc.eu.com/">Architecture <strong>School of Commons (ASOC)</strong></a> is an experimental program of architectural pedagogy and territorial transformation that connects architecture students, academics, professionals, and local communities through workshops, events, and activities.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ASOC emphasizes the long-term relationship between rural communities and their natural environment, exploring the concept of “commons” and highlighting the notions of reuse, care, and solidarity in architectural practice and education.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the heart of the project lies mutual and peer-to-peer learning, self-organization, and commons practices, along with a strong commitment to fostering collective climate awareness, aiming to integrate climate thinking into architectural training and practice.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Pilot Experience 2022–2024</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Over three years, ASOC has organized intensive workshops in three rural European areas in France, Italy, and Greece. These regions share common issues such as reduced public services, depopulation, aging populations, and a wealth of architectural heritage that remains unused.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In each location, ASOC collaborates with local communities and initiatives on pilot experiences in territorial transformation that benefit both the inhabitants and the region, promoting an architecture committed to people, heritage, and the environment.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>ASOC FRANCE 2022</strong>: <strong>Culture of Reuse</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <em>Place des Possibles</em> in Saint-Laurent-en-Royans serves as a space for work, learning, exchange, and community gatherings, amplifying projects that serve the community.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_06-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_06-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5647" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_06-min.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_06-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_06-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2022 France | Photography by Collectif Etc </figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ASOC&#8217;s first experience in 2022 focused on the concept of reuse through design. In the initial phase, a series of lightweight, reversible, and temporary micro-architecture prototypes were built, allowing participants to test different uses and low-tech construction techniques that emphasize local material resources (materials and components) and intangible resources (know-how and methods).</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_11-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_11-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5650" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_11-min.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_11-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_11-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2022 France | Photography by Collectif Etc </figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The prototypes produced during this pilot workshop became the foundation for a second phase, in which the infrastructure of <em>La Place des Possibles</em> was reorganized. For example, the central fixed kitchen was modified, and a mobile kitchen was created. Additionally, a series of podcasts, posters, signage flags, and a printed publication were produced.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_10-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_10-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5648" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_10-min.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_10-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2022_Collectif-Etc_10-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2022 France | Photography by Collectif Etc </figcaption></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>ASOC ITALY 2023</strong>: <strong>Umano no umano</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ASOC&#8217;s second experience took place at <em>La Casa di BelMondo</em> in Belmonte, Italy. Since 2019, <em>Casa di BelMondo</em> has been a collaborative space for architects, clients, and the local community.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_01-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_01-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5651" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_01-min.jpg 1200w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_01-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_01-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2023 Italy | Photography by Giulia Rosco</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the first phase of the workshop, a group of ten students from the Polytechnic University of Turin, along with faculty and ASOC partner collectives, inhabited and worked in the basement spaces of <em>Casa di BelMondo</em>, experimenting with a new form of collaborative work: the “Cantiere Domestico.”</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_16-min-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_16-min-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5654" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_16-min-1.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_16-min-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_16-min-1-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2023 Italy | Photography by Giulia Rosco</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The spaces of <em>Casa di BelMondo</em> were transformed into a dynamic laboratory where participants could collect, study, and experiment with various construction techniques and materials. This experimental process was also guided by local artisans and experts, such as Franco, a local tiler, and Gerardo Vespucci, a historian from the area. Living and working in the space became a collective growth experience, a search for social, material, and cultural textures to respond to the needs of the place.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_04-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1200" height="800" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_04-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5653" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_04-min.jpg 1200w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_04-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2023_Giulia-Rosco_04-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2023 Italy | Photography by Giulia Rosco</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In a second phase, the spatial research from the first phase materialized with the construction of a new structure between the first and second floors of <em>Casa di BelMondo</em>, designed to meet the diverse needs of those residing in Belmonte for medium to long periods throughout the year.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An abandoned area of the house was redesigned, transforming it into a hybrid space using recycled materials directly sourced from the dismantling of other parts of <em>Casa di BelMondo</em>.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>ASOC GREECE 2024</strong>: <strong>Waterlandscapes</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ASOC workshops in Greece took place at the Tirilab headquarters in Morfi, an old abandoned school recently returned to the village as a space for architectural experimentation and community gathering.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tesprotia, in the north of the country, is a region impacted by population decline and characterized by a landscape marked by water, a natural resource at risk. The region hosts several local initiatives led by women focused on preserving local traditions and resources.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Water is deeply connected to the area&#8217;s history and mythology, yet it also faces the impact of local and global ecological challenges such as overexploitation, mass tourism, and climate change.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During two intensive workshops, where participants lived and worked in the old school of Morfi in collaboration with the local community, ASOC participants had the opportunity to investigate local water landscapes, understand their mythological importance, and explore their political and social implications.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The workshops were structured around three scales of work and research: the mythological courses of water, water as a way of life, and water as a common good.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Anna-Chrysanthopoulou_06-min-1.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Anna-Chrysanthopoulou_06-min-1.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5657" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Anna-Chrysanthopoulou_06-min-1.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Anna-Chrysanthopoulou_06-min-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Anna-Chrysanthopoulou_06-min-1-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2024 Greece | Photography by Anna Chrysanthopoulou</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Work was carried out on various scales, including the restoration of local routes, the care and construction of public infrastructure, and the mapping of biodiversity sites connected to water through the study of local legends and myths.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><a href="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Panagiotis-Vasilatos_10-min.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1500" height="1000" src="http://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Panagiotis-Vasilatos_10-min.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5658" srcset="https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Panagiotis-Vasilatos_10-min.jpg 1500w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Panagiotis-Vasilatos_10-min-300x200.jpg 300w, https://zuloark.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Zuloark_ASOC_2024_Panagiotis-Vasilatos_10-min-768x512.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px" /></a><figcaption class="wp-element-caption">ASOC 2024 Greece | Photography by Panagiotis Vasilatos</figcaption></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New infrastructure and public furniture were restored and created at the old school in Morfi and its surroundings. In collaboration with the local initiative Vrilissos, the mythological route between the Morpheus cave and the Styx lagoon was researched and restored. Sites such as Lake Kalodiki were mapped, examining their connections with the area&#8217;s ecological challenges.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Reflections and interviews with the community and local experts were recorded in radio format, and the old school of Morfi was inhabited and cared for, inviting the local community to participate in the discoveries and presentation events.</p>
